What is electroporation?

-----

Electroporation is a physiological phenomenon that occurs in cell membranes as cells are exposed to electrical fields of sufficiently high intensity. Under such conditions, a high trans-membrane voltage is induced causing changes in the membrane and resulting in enhanced cell membrane permeability. Large molecules, such as some drugs or nucleic acids, which are otherwise unable to cross the cell membrane may now enter the cells.
